Stratfield in Zwolle: Werken aan waarde voor aandeelhouders

Practical cases

From business strategy to equity strategy

Working in or on your business. On paper, it’s only a number of different letters, but in practice it’s as different as night and day. Stratfield advises shareholders who wish to shift the focus towards creating more shareholder value.

The challenge
A director who is also a shareholder mainly concentrates on managing the business. Talks with the supervisory board also involve the daily business. A worrying aspect is that a large part of the activities of the business will disappear within a period of 5 years. Changes therefore need to be made. But how?

‘Focusing on the business delivers shareholder value.’

Our approach
We broach the subject with the director. We suggest he should just take a look at the business as an investor. Thinking in terms of value, it could be of interest to hive off part of the existing business. This could, for example, lead to the emergence of new opportunities and possibilities that could be more valuable. Based on the director’s new perspective, talks with the supervisory board also take on a new dimension. In this way, the opportunity arises to look at the shareholder value in a different light and how to use this to create added value in the future. In other words, by easing the director away from his business strategy and allowing him to familiarise himself with an equity strategy, he can focus his efforts on the total shareholder value from now on. So working on the business instead of in the business.
